The Strategy
Connection is key to achieving our goal of advancing college teaching.
Our multi-stage approach begins with four projects
Produce research briefs for higher education leaders, policy-makers and the public that connect teaching excellence to advancing student learning and success
Create a catalyzing coalition of lead organizations and leaders who will iteratively develop the strategy and translate it to the broader higher education ecosystem
Develop a Better College Teaching Network that will bring together diverse institutions to support, revise, and pilot the systemic redesign work moving forward
Measure teaching excellence by developing, testing and implementing approaches to evaluate teaching excellence for institutions and the public
Our Efforts
Numerous efforts to improve college teaching have taken place over the past decades. Our goal is to build on these efforts, build bridges across them, and broaden and deepen support for advancing teaching excellence at scale. We will help higher education leaders, advocates, and policy-makers, see opportunities to build capacity and enhance outcomes to ensure every student benefits from excellent teaching.
As these efforts gain traction, we will expand into Phase 2 work and beyond
Define teaching for student success–and continue to innovate
Develop new faculty with knowledge of teaching for student success by redesigning graduate education
Scale teaching development so all faculty have the opportunity to improve
Building teaching excellence innovations in disciplinary societies
Integrate teaching for student success into institutional and faculty rewards and incentives
The ABCT strategy is led by a group of experts that has been working together to advance teaching excellence at scale. The strategy is also co-designed and executed by the Alliance for Better College Teaching coalition and the Better College Teaching Network (BCTN). The ABCT coalition includes organizations that work on every facet of advancing college teaching in higher education — from professional development, policy advocacy, research and development, institutional networks, to disciplinary and other higher education associations. The BCTN includes institutions committed to college teaching excellence that will guide and pilot the strategy. Combined, these ABCT efforts will broaden and deepen support for advancing teaching excellence and help partners see an opportunity to build capacity and elevate student success by scaling teaching excellence.
